COCKFIGHTS IN BALI = INDONESIAN CASINO

bali cock fights

Those who want to spend a beautiful vacation in Bali and are aiming for a tourist region known as Lovina, should ask about cockfights... but it is only for those who have the stomach for it.

Lovina = Love Indonesia

The name Lovina cosists of two words. The words are Love and Indonesia. It is not just one village, but a several connected villages. Lovina is situated in the North part of the Island and one of its most interesting tourist attractions is a long black beach. Lovina is popular also because of nearby Batur, the most photographed temple in Bali. Close by, in Munduk are gorgeous rice terraces. In nearby Banjur, you can swim in sacred hot springs and there is great diving on Deer Island. Lovina neighbours a town called Singaraja, where they regularly hold cockfights.

When I think of Lovina, I often re-call a little story. When I stayed in Lovina, I met and started talking to on of the local man. A word met a word and we made a plan that he will take me along with him to see cockfights. Cockfights are being performed in Indonesia illegally, but they are widely tolerated. In other words, if a police man comes to a cock fight, he gets a rooster to cook in his soup and the cock fight goes on uninterrupted. A special breed of roosters is used for the fights and the roosters are usually heavily trained and prepared for the fights at home by their owners.

I met my Indonesian friend at a previously agreed location and with his rooster, closed in a portable coop, we rode on the top of a pick-up truck to Singaraja. The car took numerous turns in the town's many curvy streets and after just a short while, a large wooden arena that can seat close to a thousand people appeared right in front of us. I could have never imagined that the cockfights will be held in such a large stadium. I was wandering and asked my companion, if other people will not be offended by a presence of a nosey parker from Europe. About three hundred people, including those who were standing outside of the stadium, came to see the cockfights. I was the only European among them and most of them were up to my shoulders high and shorter. We were sitting in the second, the prominent row. The rule is, that the richer people sit closer to the fight, the tickets are more expensive (and you are more exposed to be injured).

When the crowd calmed down and settled, the trainers started to tie a blade as sharp as a razor on the heals of the roosters and the audience was asked to start betting. At that time, the crowd started yelling, I felt like I was in the middle of Maracana Soccer Stadium. They all wanted to bet on their favorite rooster and they all yelled over one another. Bets were being placed just by an eye contact with the booking person and I was amazed how the bookmakers, standing in the middle of the arena, could remember all the bets. I joined in and in the atmosphere of an „Indonesian Casino“, I also placed my bet. After a while the betting got closed and emotions were replaced by a quiet concentration. The owner sat down and roosters, hiped up by adrenalin, were held in a way, so they could see each-other. Then a lazy, life-death, battle unrolled. When one of the roosters succeeded in striking and set a razor blow to his opponent, the whole audience gasped, as if Sparta soccer team almost scored, but shot the top pole of a goal. The battle lasted about three minutes, the winning rooster was being celebrated, while the looser had to think about his sad destiny. The bets were payed out and the refreshment sellers quickly came to sell snacks. After a short break the whole scene was repeated. Two different roosters took the spotlight this time.

Suddenly I noticed that my guide is a bit thoughtful and concentrated. Oh, his rooster is coming up next. There is a lot of money involved in this fight. Luckily, our rooster proved himself an won for its owner a month salary. The good atmosphere and mood returned.

This was going on and on for two hours and I made even $60 at one point. Then I let the locals give me advice, which rooster to bet on and the balance of my account dropped down quickly. On the end I had finished with a win of $20, that I donated to my guide for gas. The whole experience certainly was a „trip“.
