Where to go and what to see in Israel

Israel ein bokek

Each year, over three and a half million tourists visit Israel. Due to the small size of Israel, it is possible to make a classic route in just two weeks and travel only 300 km. One of the possible trips may begin by sunbathing in Tel Aviv and visiting nearby Jaffa's ancient port and Roman Caesarea. The road continues to Haifa, famous for its Bahai gardens and a also stops at the crusader Akka. Furthermore we travel through Nazareth to Tiberias and Safet by the Galilee Lake. Along the Dead Sea, the journey continues to Jericho and then to Ein Bokek resort including the nearby Masada Fortress. The highlight of the journey is Jerusalem with Bethlehem, finishing back in Tel Aviv.

Travelling in the Palestinian area of the West Bank of Jordan is safe, on the other hand visiting the Gaza Strip is not recommended.

Travelling in Israel on your own

Israel jerusalem

I could not plan the trip to Israel entirely according to my ideas, as I had to go along with other duties I had in Tel Aviv at the time. I did not go sightseeing, but I went for excursions and trips from Tel Aviv. But even so, the visit to Israel was a unique experience for me.

For the trip I only packed my stuff in a small cyclist´s bag just as during my previous tours – see the "What to pack for the road" tip, which in the end, did not weigh more than 6 kg. Again, I had my hygiene fitted in 100ml so I could use my bag as hand luggage aboard flights. Due to entrances to the Jerusalem monuments, I packed my long trousers and closed shoes too.

While traveling to Israel, it is recommended to be at the airport at least two and a half hours before departure. In front of the check-in counters themselves there are other counters for which the passengers must first arrive. Here the employees of El Al make an interview with the tourists, during which they will ask for the reason of the trip, itinerary etc. Only after that check-in takes place. In Israel, immigration officials do not stamp tourist passports, making it easier for them to travel to Arab countries.

Accommodation such as Bed & Breakfest and hostels can be easily resolved using the web sites www.bnb.co.il, www.zimmeril.com and www.hostels-israel.com.

Traveling in Israel is also possible by local buses www.egged.co.il, trains www.israrail.org.il or by car www.eldan.co.il. When traveling by public means, one should realize that during shabbat (which starts on Friday at 15:00 afternoon and ends on Saturday after sunset), the timetable for trains and buses is greatly reduced. In case of renting a car, the majority of companies do not allow driving in the Palestinian territories and limit the number of kilometers travelled.
