India south Kerala

Itinerary for journey to south India

I landed in Hyderabad in India and got on a train the same day, which took me to the ruins of famous and formerly powerful Vijayanagara Empire in Hampi. From there I continued to Mysore with its grand palace of former maharajas and to Madurai with exceptional Meenakshi temple, which is often called the Taj Mahal of the south. In Madurai I exchanged trains with buses and moved to the state of Kerala, where I visited emerald tea plantations in the Western Ghats mountains, which surround the city of Munnar. Then I spent next few days in national park Periyar. I moved from the mountains to the seaside and sailed through the green canals in Allepey, which is called the Venice of the East. I finished my journey lazily on the beach Varkala.

I planned my itinerary as follows:

01 - flight to Dubai 9:20-18:30, flight to Hyderabad 00:30-05:30
02 - Hyderabad, train Decan 23:10 - Hospet 10:10

04 - Hampi temples, train Hospet 21:30 - Mysore 09:15
05 - arrival 09:15, Mysore

07 - arrival 07:20, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple
08 - bus Munnar 5:55, Munnar
09 - Munnar, tea plantations walk
10 - bus Munnar - Kumily 12:20-16:50
11 - national park Periyar (Kumily), trip

13 - Allepey backwatters trip
14 - Allepey, train to Varkaly 6:25 - 08:46, Varakala beach
15 - Varkala beach
16 - Varkala beach

What I would do differently today

While I was planning my journey, I chose few main points on the route that I definitely wanted to visit. I didn't want to miss Hampi, Madurai, Munnar, Alleppey and Varkala beaches. On the other hand, I was limited by number of days I had off. If I haven't been to Goa before or if I had few more days on this journey, I would certainly start in Goa instead of in Hyderabad. After few days on Palolem beach I would take a night bus to Hampi from a near town Gokarna [runs every day] or take a train from Madgaon – Hospet [runs every other day].

I was a little bit disappointed by national park Periyar, but it might be because I was able to compare it to national parks in Sri Lanka. While in Sri Lanka I could see wild animals, including elephants, on every step I took, in Periyar, I saw literally nothing.
